Kathmandu is the busy, chaotic capital of Nepal. As well as being the center of an ancient Asian mountain culture, it is an international place. It is a gateway to the mountains for backpackers, mountaineers, missionaries, and NGOs. It is a place of contrast and contradiction; East meets West, chaos and solitude, commerce and mystery.

The second single from upcoming full-length “Holy Mountain”, “Kathmandu” is a sonic picture of these contrasts. The faster section of the piece existed some time before the rest, and Whitcroft has shared that this particular part always reminded him of Hindi music. With this as his starting point, he painted a picture of contrast around it with the themes of Kathmandu in mind. The piece was captured on a Lowden O12 which created an incredibly full and open sound that parallels the complex and rich Nepalese culture. The open tuning also hints at other Indo-European music, and perhaps it is that thread of familiarity that makes it so immediately appealing to the ear. An uplifting and buoyant track, “Kathmandu” is a piece that flits between ruminating passages and rhythmically energetic ones.

“Kathmandu” is both a literal representation of a city and a contemplation on the human condition. In Whitcroft’s own words, “I think our lives are full of contradictions. We seek solitude in the middle of the hubbub. We can feel lonely in a crowd, our lives are mundane and mysterious”.
